Thank you for your comment and I am glad that you are better. You are right, we are our own devil on many levels. I know many times I create my own fear and rather than be apart of a group that may benefit me and society, I would rather be by myself. I too often imagine others as my enemy from people who would never hurt me for nothing. So we are our own Satan.

But I've seen enough things in my life to believe that Satan is real and according the Jehovah Witnesses he was cast down to this earth in 1914, before that he only visited here. Satan controls us using fear, deception and division. It is a very subtle control and for those who do not buy into the fear, deception and division, they may not even believe that Satan does exist and have no reason to believe so, and that's fine.

Like you, I am learning and becoming a better person. My conversion may not be as quick as my friends, but he really was messed up. In the military you are forced to be close to people that you wouldn't otherwise associate with, but because he is the only one like him I have known and I was unable to follow him throughout his life, there are some things I can only assume.

That's an interesting story. I like the questions it raises. To witness a transformation like the one described is always a powerful experience. Conversions have historically been used to promote or provide evidence that a certian set of beliefs are valid and real in some sense. "I was lost and unhappy, but I found (fill in the blank: God, religion, a commercial product, someone, something, anything) and now I am saved or happy or healed or sober". I appriciate these experiences (I have had a few of them myself) and celebrate the diverse variety of ways they can occure in the lives of human beings. In regards to you friend, he experienced a conversion of sorts and depending on who you ask you'll find an interpretation to explain how and why it happened. Take one of mine for example; for a time my days, months, years were spent getting high on mood altering chemicals and doing everything I could to staying high. I did many dangerous harmful things and in spite of my fear of getting into legal trouble, I never had a problem with law enforcement. But one day something happened and I got clean and sober. My world changed radically. Now I can't jaywalk without getting a ticket! This was not your friends story, but I only wanted to illustrate that our perceptions and the way we recount our stories to others is affected by our outlook and temperment. I felt lost, something happened and I was "saved". My "reality" changed. There was so much more going on in my life during that period, underlying issues; past traumas, stress, grief, anger and frustration (my using one of the most obvious symptoms of these unresolved conflicts). Now sometimes these conversions happen slowly over times, what someone called the "educational variety", sometimes they are sudden and more dramatic. My feeling is that the "conversion" is part of a process of change. Some have described this in terms of stages; Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action and Maintanance. Your friend may have gone thru something like this. This doesn't speak to what was motivaing him throughout his journey. You were fortunate (as was he) to be a part of this.
Some would say we are all sons and daughters of Satan as a way of describing the idea that we are prone to shortcuts, half truths and self deception, often resulting in real harm to ourselves and others. I see it as a metaphor.
For me personally, the most important thing about these tranformations is how I keep this experience fresh and alive in my life in order to maintain my sobriety and continue the process of living and enjoying life without causing myself or others harm.

I beg to differ, you are a Christian. Being a Christian is a way of life a state of mind. Some people who go to church every Sunday and can quote the Bible chapter and verse may not be Christian in their outlook and the way they treat others.

I just noticed I left a word out in my statement: "Nevertheless, that monument, nor anything on that monument, has anything to do with the Freemasons’ organization. " This should have read: "Nevertheless, neither that monument, nor anything on that monument, has anything to do with the Freemasons’ organization. "

I think I would have liked Charles Taze Russell. I often go out on a limb and usually I'm just left out there. So your comment means a lot to me.

The Jehova Witnesses come to visit me once a week. Twice I have told them that I don't think I will join their church, but still they come. They're not bad people, they just want to teach me some things and so they're welcome in my house as long as they don't think I have to agree with them. There are many things I do agree with them on. When they taught me about 1914, that just made a lot of sense. 1914 was the year that the foundation for a Jewish nation was laid and that is the beginning of a whole lot of trouble on our earth. Trouble that seems to be escalating rapidly. Having learned some of the Muslim teaching about the anti Christ, it was just another piece of the puzzle that fit. I would be more than happy to visit your sight and learn more about Mr. Russell.
