Dozens Of Call Center Workers Walk Off Job In Protest Rather Than Read McCain Script Attacking Obama

Some three dozen workers at a telemarketing call center in Indiana walked off the job rather than read an incendiary McCain campaign script attacking Barack Obama, according to two workers at the center and one of their parents.

Nina Williams, a stay-at-home mom in Lake County, Indiana, tells us that her daughter recently called her from her job at the center, upset that she had been asked to read a script attacking Obama for being “dangerously weak on crime,” “coddling criminals,” and for voting against “protecting children from danger.”

Williams’ daughter told her that up to 40 of her co-workers had refused to read the script, and had left the call center after supervisors told them that they would have to either read the call or leave, Williams says. The call center is called Americall, and it’s located in Hobart, IN.

“They walked out,” Williams says of her daughter and her co-workers, adding that they weren’t fired but willingly sacrificed pay rather than read the lines. “They were told [by supervisors], `If you all leave, you’re not gonna get paid for the rest of the day.”

The daughter, who wanted her name withheld fearing retribution from her employer, confirmed the story to us. “It was like at least 40 people,” the daughter said. “People thought the script was nasty and they didn’t wanna read it.”

A second worker at the call center confirmed the episode, saying that “at least 30″ workers had walked out after refusing to read the script.

“We were asked to read something saying [Obama and Democrats] were against protecting children from danger,” this worker said. “I wouldn’t do it. A lot of people left. They thought it was disgusting.”

This worker, too, confirmed sacrificing pay to walk out, saying her supervisor told her: “If you don’t wanna phone it you can just go home for the day.”

The script coincided with this robo-slime call running in other states, but because robocalling is illegal in Indiana it was being read by call center workers.

Representatives at Americall in Indiana, and at the company’s corporate headquarters in Naperville, Illinois, didn’t return calls for comment.

Don’t Let Nobody Stop You From Voting

Dear Blog

In the past I had said that I could not vote for Obama because of his support of the 700 billion dollar bail out.

Well here is my delima.  Here in Oklahoma you cannot write in a person’s name for president, that disqualifies your whole ballet.  Oklahoma apparently only recognizes Republicans and Democrats.  So I can only choose between McCain and Obama.

Ok.  I think McCain is a good person, but I think Obama is a better, so I’ll have to vote for the better person, OBAMA.

But I’m telling you, they’re liars, both of them and neither one of them is the best candidate for president, but we get what we get and I have to vote for the least of two evils, and that would be Obama.

I’ve been goofing around.  After upgrading my computer, well you know I had downloaded the latest and greatest Linux I could find, burn it and install it because I could and so I did.

Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 4.whatever.  Well with tears in my eyes, broken hearted and a contrite spirit, in other words, I was crushed.  I couldn’t get it to work.  Either it couldn’t find my monitor or video card, I don’t know which because I couldn’t get in there to find out.  You know how the screen is so big, you can’t access the buttons in all the screens.  It was frustrating, but it looked nice.

I have an older copy.  A 32 bit Kubuntu 7.04 and it worked pretty good, I had good luck with it.  But it was a 32 bit and I have a 64 bit processor and so I wanted a 64 bit OS, until I discovered everything don’t work with a 64 bit OS and so now I want a 32 bit, kinda went around a circle there didn’t I.  That’s what I do, that’s how you learn.

So I installed that older copy, luckily it came with Firefox 2.something because their 3.something always crashes.  Then I got this message, would you like to upgrade to 7.10.  Oh man, the temptation was to great, I said, OK.  It worked, it was so cool.  So now I had 7.10 and I got it from 7.04, how cool is that.  Well, then it asked me would you like to upgrade to 8.04.  Heart be still, my finger trembled as it caressed the enter key and it all happened so fast, in the space of a TV commercial, behold, I have 8.04.  It didn’t give me KDE 4.something, I still have KDE 3.5 something.  Thepenguin must know that KDE 4 won’t work on my computer, that’s a pretty smart penguin, because it aint asking if I want KDS 4.

Two strange things happened.  It upgraded my firefox to 3.something and I thought oh no, it’s going to crash all the time.  But, it doesn’t, it hasn’t crashed yet, it’s been almost a week, unbelievable.  See it was Windows all the time - I knew it.

And the other strange thing, really not so strange, seems to happen a lot, my windows xp became unbootable.  And I thought about it.  If I try to fix windows xp I could loose my Linux.  Screw windows, I got Linux working and working good.  But you know, for us techie amateurs, if something is broken we have to fix it.  So I did, Ran the sort of reinstall windows fix thing and low and behold, windows didn’t steal the bootup and Linux was still there working, and hopefully they will live happily ever after, at least that’s the way it works in fairy tales.

So you know all that takes time.  Now, once again, I’m behind on my blog and have about 400 emails in my email box.  But, before I did anything else, I figure I should tell people, before the election that I’m voting for Obama.

Andrew Rice Grows In Popularity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rice: ‘It’s time to put people before politics’
Poll shows State Sen. Andrew Rice
within single digits of Jim Inhofe

Press Release:
Monday, Aug. 18, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY — A poll released Monday by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Rice Campaign shows strong momentum for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Rice and has him within striking distance of Sen. Jim Inhofe, who has been in Washington for 22 years.

Recent numbers show Rice at 41 to Inhofe’s 50 percent. The State Senator and Democratic Nominee for the U.S. Senate said it is time our representatives in Washington to put people before politics.

“As your U.S. Senator, I will do what is right for Oklahoma and bring people together from all sides and parties to find solutions,” Rice said. “These days, Oklahomans are struggling to pay for gas, worried about having health care and if their children are getting a quality education. It is not a time to play partisan politics. We need new leadership that will help find solutions to our problems.”

This latest poll is one more major sign that Oklahomans are looking for someone who will represent the people of Oklahoma first, not their political party. The Tulsa World’s Sooner Poll showed the race at 52-30 in June and 60-19 in December. This latest poll, conducted Aug. 12-14, shows a sure and steady climb in statewide support for Rice.

Inhofe, who has served in Washington for 22 years and has been in politics for 40, has a job approval rating of 46 percent, according to the latest poll.

“Jim Inhofe has been in Washington a long time. Having received more than $1 million in contributions from big oil, he has lost his way from when Oklahomans first elected him,” said Geri Prado, Rice’s campaign manager. “It’s time for a U.S. Senator who represents his constituents, not his contributors.”
